Celebrating two major milestones for the Faculty of Business and Law

This year marks dual celebrations for The Open University’s Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) as the Business School commemorates its 40th anniversary, and the Law School celebrates 25 years of impactful legal education.

The Business School’s 40th Anniversary:

Established in 1983, the OU Business School has become part of an elite group of just 1% of business schools worldwide that are triple-accredited.

Welcoming 1,600 students in its first year, it now has a diverse community of over 108,000 alumni, including 28,000 MBA graduates spanning 125 countries.

Significant milestones include becoming Europe’s largest business school in 1989, receiving the Queen’s Award for Export in 1997, and winning the Business Partnership category in the Guardian University awards in 2017.

Professor Siv Vangen, Head of the Business School, said:

“What truly sets us apart is our inclusiveness. What makes us exceptional is our open access, our phenomenal reach and our continuing and increasing focus on social justice, sustainability, and equity.

Milestones are worth marking and so we hope you will join us in celebrating forty years of the Open University Business School.”

25 years of teaching law:

Since 1998, the OU Law School has empowered over 60,000 students to pursue legal education, making its undergraduate law degree the most popular law degree programme in Europe

With 12,000 alumni across 57 countries, its 2014 introduction of the popular Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LLB) further solidified its impact. The 2016 launch of the Open Justice Centre, offering pro bono legal services, and recognition in the LawWorks and Attorney General Student Awards showcase its commitment to social justice.

Head of the Law School, Hugh McFaul, said:

“The Law School occupies a unique place in legal education as we were the first institution to provide a genuinely open access law degree.

We have a huge amount to be proud of and much to celebrate and we look forward the next 25 years of providing innovative legal education and research which is truly open to people, places, methods, and ideas.”
