OU/BBC co-productions to look out for this Autumn

2022 has already been a bumper year for OU/BBC co-productions with a variety of content hitting our channels and platforms, such as The Green Planet, The Decade the Rich Won, Freeze, We Are Black and British and Long Live My Happy Head for TV and iPlayer; whilst on Radio and BBC Sounds there has been BBC Inside Science, The Bottom Line, All in the Mind, Bad People and Think with Pinker. Our partnership with the World Service Learning English Channel co-created content about Leadership and International Law.

We are thrilled that the critically acclaimed, The Green Planet has five nominations at the 2022 Wildscreen Panda Awards along with Springwatch 2020, the winners will be announced in October. We also have four co-productions shortlisted for the Grierson Awards; The Decade the Rich Won, Dementia & Us, The Green Planet: Tropical Worlds and We Are Black and British. Final nominations will be revealed on 21 September with winners due to be announced at the 50th annual awards ceremony on 10 November.

Frozen Planet 2 (6 x 60’) BBC One | September

The return of this landmark series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, reveals life in the most remote and seemingly hostile corners of our planet – not just the Polar Regions, but across all the surprising and diverse cold wildernesses on Earth. A free, OU poster will be available to order, supporting the series.

Healthcare Careers (10 x 3’) BBC Bitesize | available from 1st September

Following on from Green Careers, a new series of ten informative short films focusing on lesser-known roles in the healthcare sector through the eyes of those starting out in their careers, launches on BBC Bitesize and OU Connect.

The Big Green Money Show (10 x 45’) Radio5 Live/BBC Sounds | late Autumn

A new collaboration with Radio 5 Live, The Big Green Money podcast is hosted by Deborah Meaden from Dragon’s Den and is intended to help ordinary people as they reorientate their lives and spending to tackle climate change.

Hospital S8 (8 x 60’) BBC2 | late Autumn

The return of the popular Hospital series, this time from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, following some of Britain’s most experienced clinicians and the difficult decisions they have to make each day on who to treat first.

The Real CSI S3 (4 x 60’) BBC2 | late Autumn

Following on from the success of series two, we’re re-joining West Midlands Police and their team of forensic investigators, scientists and detectives to follow present-tense criminal investigations through the eyes of those who use science, experience and intuition to crack cases.

We also have three new co-productions supporting the nations, Wales: Music Nation with Huw Stephens (w/title) (2 x 60’) and A Special School S2 (3 x 30’) for BBC Wales and The Women Who Changed Modern Scotland (3 x 60’) for BBC Scotland.

More videos will be added to the BBC Ideas OU playlist in the coming months, including, The extraordinary life of Josephine Baker, Should zoos still exist? and The connection between mental and physical health. The success of our collaboration with BBC Ideas has been recognised with a win at this year’s Webby Awards for Best Video – Science and Education.
