Award success for entrepreneurial student

Open University in Scotland student Laura Ripley has scooped the Royal Bank of Scotland Female Entrepreneurship Award at the 13th annual Converge Awards that recognises businesses impact on society and the environment.

Laura’s business, Northern Frights, is a horror and fantasy events company that uses props, special effects, and skilled actors to create immersive and thriving events in the North of Scotland.

Her entry impressed the judges due to her resilience and determination to cut through a largely male-dominated and niche sector, with an ambitious business model that showed real entrepreneurial spirit.

They all agreed that Laura was a role model for future female entrepreneurs hoping to work in the sector and her attitude embodied the spirit behind the award.

The prize includes £10,000 towards business development, plus a mentoring session with a senior RBS executive.

On winning the award Laura said:

“This award not only supports my business financially, especially considering the start-up expenses from this year, but it also underscores the legitimacy of my unique venture. Contrary to some opinions, my business isn’t just an eccentric hobby — it’s a genuine, heartfelt pursuit.”

Susan Stewart, Director at The Open University in Scotland, said:

“The Open University’s mission is to be open to people, places, methods, and ideas, helping our students to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential. We have an excellent Entrepreneur’s Hub, and I am proud that the OU has been able to support Laura and many others to successfully innovate their ideas. Many congratulations to all the winners and finalists!”

Laura launched Northern Frights after working for 14 years in the oil industry and feeling unfulfilled. She wanted to do something she enjoyed and felt that Scotland was missing out on the exciting events that she liked to attend, so the idea for Northern Frights was born.

She is currently working towards an Open degree, studying subjects that she can apply directly to her business including Design, Business Studies, and Creative Writing.

The Converge Awards are open to all entrepreneurial students, staff, and recent graduates of Scottish Universities. Their aim is to empower the next generation of innovators, creators, and ground breakers to turn ideas into viable and sustainable businesses, through training, networking, 1-2-1 support, cash prizes, and expert, professional advice from industry partners.
