English in Action wins top award for innovation in international education

The OU’s English in Action project has won the award for progressive education delivery at this year’s PIEoneer Awards.

The Awards, which took place in London on 8 September 2017, celebrate the most innovative work being done across the international education sector.

Matthew Foster, director of the International Development Office at the OU says:

We are absolutely delighted that English in Action has been recognised by the PIEoneer Awards. We’re heartened that through English in Action we have been able to tell an important and bright story of a new generation of learning in Bangladesh.

English in Action (EiA) is a technology-enabled platform that has been designed for classroom teachers in Bangladesh to help them improve on English language teaching.

EiA aims to improve children’s learning through changing teachers’ classroom practice by helping them move from non-communicative English classes dominated by the teacher towards more participatory lessons which include increased opportunities for learners to speak and practise English.

EiA uses Mediated Authentic Videos with pedagogical guidance and was funded by The Department for International Development. Teaching materials are harnessed by local teachers by using on low-cost mobile phones.

To date, EiA has been used in 227 of 490 districts in Bangladesh, and by nearly 43,000 primary teachers, reaching over 3 million primary school children.
